You guys are killing me.
My installer looked at it with me today and we saw no signs of oil on the MAF. Its pretty damn difficult trying to determine what filter I have. I don't think I have the ProDRY S P/N 21-90004 but rather the 24-91021 which is seemingly the "oiled filter". How would I know if I was suffering decreased performance from oil on the MAF? Would I get a fault code reading?
What should I do? Should I call AFE and have them send me the other ProDRY S Filter and then have my installers put it in?
Help me out.

Wait, C! I spoke with Darwin and found out I have the dry cone. That's why I've never had any problems.

Okay,
I give up. I don't know anymore. Still, Darwin hasn't reported any problems and neither has ICEMAN 316, who's got the same AFE CAI blue cone.

The dry filter is grey-colorless actually. Pretty easy to spot compared to the oiled blue. If it is grey and well dry-it is the dry kind
I'll report back when I find out.

Since I have it sitting in the box, ready for install, I'm going with the blue, high performance filter over the dry. I can't wait to order the dry one. Having it sitting here is just killing me. Plus, vegastrashed, SoCalM5Mang and a few others said they never had issues. If I do, I'll get it cleaned and order the dry one. But I'm willing to take the chance for now.

So I called AFE direct today and spoke to their Tech department. They said that they have never had any issues with the MAF sensor on a 5 series BMW being reported with the Blue Filter. However, that's not to say that this isn't an issue. It could be that only their distributors have heard of this issue. What the technician did say was the following:
1) The Blue Filter is oiled with the EXACT amount of grams of oil for that filter so it does NOT bleed into the tube and get in the way of the MAF sensor. It is specifically designed and built with this in mind.
2) He said that if anything, it's the micron particles that pass through the filter that get caught on the sensor (dust, etc.), but it's not the oil itself.
3) He said it is very easy to clean, should it happen, but said it shouldn't. He was pretty serious about it being very uncommon.
4) Performance wise, he said the Blue Filter is better. However, he said the Dry Filter is better for keeping particles out. Yet, he said we're talking half a micron, which really isn't all that much of a difference. Both do an excellent job and he recommended I stay with the Blue, over the Dry.
That all said, I will be installing the AFE CAI tonight without further delay. I guess I just needed to hear it from AFE directly. I will post pix upon completion.
/C
PS - Don't ever compare me to sleepyca31/redwhiteblue. That's one of the worst insults ever.

Has anybody proven the effectiveness of this CAI using a dyno or A/F ratio reading or G-Meter???
I have been schooled that BMW's air boxes in the E60 are designed in a way to create Pressure for the filter to suck from and this CAI looks as though it will lose all of that pressure.
The stock airbox actually has feeding tubes from behind the front air dam that provides cool air and this AFE CAI appears to get more air from the engine bay then the front air dam???
you guys want to fill me in on this???
