Hi Guys,

I know there is a lot of confusion or talk about the AFE losing power. On the M5 yes it did lose power, but the ECU never had a chance to adapt to the new air flow. I have a chart that I'm about to put up that will explain some kind of reasoning. I first did Dinan, AFE, Stock with stock filter, Stock w/ NO filter. I did all this WITHOUT letting the ECU adapt. Dinan claims 17whp and I gained 3.06 AFE claims 7whp and I gained .066whp. Now please keep in mind that I didn't lose HP or gain a lot. This was with the hood closed and before I got my scoops on as well. I hope this clears some issues. Please feel free to contact me anytime. Thank you.

Two reviews of the AFE CAI from SocalM5Mang and I. Unfortunately, neither SocalM5Mang nor I have a pre/post dyno for the AFE. I believe that the AFE CAI works best with a remapped ECU and free-flow exhaust which we both have.

550i with AFE CAI.
545I with AFE CAI.

Not a big fan of aFe intakes on NA engines. Dyno after driving your car for an hour. Since the aFe intakes are not sealed you will lose power, heat soak.

Yea you are right, I definetly feel a loss in power, I need to take it out soon, otherwise how would I seal it, in order to block the hot air coming from the engine bay.

Maybe I'm missing something regarding the AFE. While I understand there will be quite a bit of hot air being sucked in at idle, once the car begins moving any appreciable amount, cooler outside air will be rammed/drawn in from the intake port in the front, right? At that point, wouldn't the air temperature be similar to the stock airbox? I'm gonna have to find time to hook up a scanner and get the MAP sensor temp readings under various loads using both the stock and AFE intakes and compare. Not gonna happen real soon - but I'll try it once I get time. Curious...
