Hello.... I read it too.... some says useless, some says might loss o gain a bit but the sound., some says it is good on cold climates like Canada.... IMO it is up to you.
there is a video M5 with AFE vs M5 Stock..... the one with AFE won..... This is REAL RUN in REAL WORLD.
Some says on Dyno AFE losses HP... it should be..... but it is not a REAL RUN.

Hey! Ive had mine for about a year and have the following thoughts. During the summer you can feel the loss in power. Althought that roaring noise that comes from the eninge with the AFE intake is hott. I'll have to admit. Now with the winter at my doorstep and temperatures reaching -5c their is a huge gain in high end pull. theirs no doubt about it. So theirs alot of things you have to think about before spending your money. My 0.02c

I hear it's just a waste of money.
I say if you dont have a sprintbooster, exhaust or an ECU remap, I would get those mods first before an AFE intake... just my .02

That video of the M5 seems a bit unrealistic. There's no way an M5 with just an AFE intake + exhaust upgrade would beat another stock M5 that badly. There's probably more upgrades on that M5, if not it was probably racing a 545/550i.
