Having the M5 BBK installed about 2 months ago, I decided today to modify the hubs and make them "M5 like" with 2 bolts on each rotor. I had to drill one more hole and make one new thread in the front hubs, since the other hole matches the hub correctly, I also made 2 new holes with thread in the rear hubs, as holes on M5 rotors are completely out of place when installed on standard (non M5) hubs. In addition I had to widen the rear holes a little, for about 2mm depth with a 13mm drill, as on the rear rotors the bolt slips deeper and holds both rotor and hub aligned.

I ordered 4 bolts for the M5 front rotors only (part# 34111123072) not anything else, because I used the 2 old bolts from the stock front rotors, along with the 2 stock rear bolts, which they are identical and same part# with the M5 rear rotors bolts.

I starded drilling the holes with a 3mm drill, second pass with a 4,2mm and final pass with 6.5mm drill, which is the correct width in order to build an 8mm thread, usind M8X1.25 pattern thread making tool in 3 passes, initial/intermediate/final (3part tool, one for every passing see tool at lower right corner in 4th pic below)

This may help some members they want to instal the M5 BBK on their standard E60 and understand where is the difference between M5 and standard rotors during installation.

Also, I had the opportunity to check the 17" spare wheel mounted along with the front M5 brakes. I tried it with 15 mm spacer in the front and the clearance between caliper and spare wheel is 2mm (with 15mm spacer -or more- works perfect to the rear ..with M5 brakes)

I'd suggest to those with M5 brakes that a 20mm spacer (and 20mm longer bolts) is good/safe enough setup for both front and rear, in case of a flat tire

Excellent diagrams - this has helped me with the 'optional' drilling required. A number of questions just to assist this post and my DIY:

1. Does the dust plate on the REAR come off without dismantling the hub or handbrake pads?

2. Have you got spacers on the REAR as I was a bit confused at first as it didn't have existing holes (I thought it was the disc)?

To get past the hub: make a cut at the thin metal connector (marked red), bend one edge slightly out and slide dust protector off. Same procedure to install the M5 dust protector.

Andy has already answered, but more detailed, cut with a wire cutter in the middle (red mark - it is very thin metal) and pull/stretch half cutted part to the front and the other half to the back, so it could enter slantwise over the hub and get in. (the same way you'll remove the old cover)
Whene it's done, align the cutted parts again, place the rubber from the old cover to the new one and screw it using the old supporting ring. That's all

No, I don't have any spacer installed in the above pics, its just the M5 rotors, which their hub is made of magnesium as well as the calipers are.

pretty nice write up yeah when i did my rotors i happen to have some rotor studs that fit so i didn't need modifications for the front or rear.
