Evening all,
Just purchased 2007 550i M Sport touring here in Scotland (or wagon as you call is in the US). Fantastic car and very rare as it's a manual. I've just come from a E39 540i which if I'm honest sounded a lot nicer, but the 550i is a lot quicker.
The 550i engine isn't even detectable unless the stereo is off. I plan a quad conversion next year (got to buy 172 style alloys first). I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to help things for now?
I've removed the sound proofing under the engine cover and that helped a little. Is there an exhaust valve that can be "forced" open regardless of rpm?
What about the RPI intakes, they are only about $99, but do they add an extra noise, that's the question? Anyone got pictures of them, I can't figure where the scoop goes.
There are very few of these in the UK, so no information on tuning is available. Thank in advance.

Agree, all to quiet. I was settling on a 535d when the importer got a 550 across the lot for a day or so. Invited me in to hear the symphoni, but frankly I heard nothing until about 4500 revs and the noise wasn't loud enough to silence the roar of the fuelgauge crashing towards E so I decided to stay with the diesel. I've at times regretted I didn't take the M but that's another story and there the fuel gauge has taken even more steroids; thankfully it has an engine roar that can deafen the sound of the fuel gauge....
No question I'd go for quads if I'd ended up with a 550; then it practically is an M - more or less.
