Does anyone know if the auto/steptronic transmission on the 545i can be reprogrammed? In particular, I'm looking for more real-time response in manual mode. There seems to be an excessive lag between the shift request and when the car actually follows through.

TIA

Nope. I am interested to find out if the transmission is "tunable", specifically manual mode. For example, on hard acceleration in M1, the I don't have the precise control over the timing of the upshift that I'd like. I tell it to shift, but there is a delay for some reason, probably something in the software.

In a nutshell, I'm looking for a way to reprogram the transmission for lowered delay in the manual shifts, and possibly to in some ways tell the computer to stop trying to out-think me, e.g. when I ask for a gear change, don't wait, DO IT! I think the performance benefit could be huge.

I'm assuming that since you can "remap" your ECM, why not be able to do the same for the transmission?

i'm no expert on automatics, but your problem sounds like a limitation on the steptronic hardware - which is at its core, a traditional slushbox with a torque converter - which shifts slow compared to the manual in your last car. if you want faster shifts, smg and the new sport auto can help with that!

but for all i know, maybe a new progman version will speed things up for you...

I would tend to agree, with the exception that when in DS it shifts quickly enough for its own needs. I'd just like to have that responsiveness at my fingertips.

I'm kind of hoping there is some ability to program this via software.

I'm not going to expect BMW to do it. Don't need any more bugs than I already have!
