He wouldn't necessarily lose over-all top end, and I think that he definitely wouldn't lose governed top end. He would be making 6th gear more useful. For example, some cars are faster top end in 4th rather than 5th.

Ah thats good then. I wouldnt want to lose any gear top end... governed top end is fine... we cant really use it here anyways but having a better more useable 6th is good.

In any case, for me at least, faster is better. The M5 was a little out of range (although coming down fast), but I would like to be a little faster than the other 545/550 out there.
It you want to be faster than 545/550 and M5 look into VF Engineering supercharger. Should be coming out to market any day now.

Or get the R54 Motor and the VF supercharger combo

"The R54 Motor uses much of the same technology found in the latest F1 motors: billet crankshaft, billet rods, and a set of forget pistons that are amongst the lightest to ever find their way into a production-based motor.

The ported cylinder heads boast 22% more efficiency than the stock ones, and this is mainly obtained through the use of larger valves and modified cam profiles.

The motor internals are complemented by a full race-bred exhaust, entirely hand-made out of 304 stainless steel. It features equal length primaries, metal matrix catalytic converters, an X-Flow downpipe, and 2 hyper-efficient rear silencers with quad pipes.

The results are impressive: 489 HP SAE @ 6500 RPM, but more important, an astounding 408 lbs-ft of torque at only 3800 RPM. The performance of the R54 Sedan is exhilarating: 0-62 mph in a mere 4.5 seconds, and a top speed of 200 mph. "

Lots of $$$$ though.

What I would say is if you want to buy a bundle of trouble, then look into the VF Engineering supercharger. It could be fast, but would the car run right? Would you be fooling with the car all the time because of this, that, or the other quirk? What happens when you blow your engine (sure VF will say it's all engineered so that that won't happen)? Does VF offer a warranty as sound as that of Dinan? Does the Co. even claim to offer a warranty like Dinan's. Except for a muffler, I personally would buy no performance parts for a BMW except Dinan's--and even then I would only feel mostly secure.

I just sold my 02 M3 Dinan S and bought a 545i with a manual transmission. My M3 was a manual and it was clearly quicker 0-60 than the SMG.

As I look at 545i 0-60 times for manual, SMG and step transmissions, it seems that given the Dinan differential swap to 3.45, my manual could theoretically produce 0-60 times in the 4.7 or 4.8 range, depending on shifting dexterity.

Has anyone done this? If so what were your results?
One thing that hasn't been mention WRT the differential is that you undoubtedly will have a wheel spin problem, and you won't want to try to correct it with the power robbers--DSC or DTC. I hope that your car has 18's on it. If so, BFG has drag radials in the right size (maybe in 17's too if your car came with them). I would put them on immediately if I changed the rear end--no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Well, one butt; you'd be kicking it. Also, if you have to change wheel sizes to get DR's, then I would consider only one brand because of their light-weight styles available--BBS (well, and BMW wheels assuming you could find some really light weight ones). I would stay in spec with wheel and tires.

Tulsa and others : send a mail to www.bimmerworld.com : they should have ring and pinion for 3.23 or 3.38 final drive ratio .

And the price should be low .

Mail them and keep us informed!

Thanks for the information - I know I won't be as fast as my M3, but with two kids I had to make the adjustment. That being said, I feel the need for a little more speed. I will probably have several more questions and will certainly keep the forum updated as the car develops.

I wouldn't be too sure. I have rolled even with one current M3 (not a vert).

You know, I trust grogan545's times because they are "raw" scores and he has calibrated his meter at the strip. I generally don't act like it, but I have a little trepidation about mine because of the large altitude adjustment. You mentioned driving your car the next time you come to Phoenix, and I have to admit that I wouldn't want you to burst my bubble if my car really isn't as fast as it appears to be. And, I haven't been able to start the re-learning process since my update to 23.01 because of my broken ankle--i.e., I can't brake torque yet , but mainly I haven't felt like going out at 2:00 to 4:00 a.m. as I always do.
Zman, broken ankle!!!!.Boy it appears you are having a trying year. You would be better off with no luck at all rather than the luck you are having lately.Hopefully all is healing well and you will be back to normal soon.

I know what you mean about "raw" times. For some reason I feel a little doubtful when I get a good weather corrected time. When I see a 4.80's on my GT2 it seems more real even though I know it was done in very favorable weather conditions.

The hip was a little bad the first week, but as you know I was flying thereafter. The darn ankle requires so much down time--cast and the either boot or ankle brace. The ankle is the only trying part. The hip was on purpose.
