This is pretty much a no brainer, go with the 5, the RL is nothing but an over-grown legend. Besides, you can't compare a BMW to an Acura.

I would add the Audi A6 3.2 to the evaluation list.
Audi? Are you crazy?

lol. Audis are okay.
i like the s6 though, but they don't retain their value well and everyone i talk to say they will come back to bmw as soon as their lease is over.

Thank you guys all so much for all of your inputs. There are a couple of things I feel I left out, one be it that I will be driving the car 100 miles every single day to commute from NY (place of living ) to NJ (place of work). Also I have owned stick shift cars before, and last what year and model you guys recommend for the mentioned amount?

This may be the kicker. Are you at all concerned about gas prices and such? While I'd love to recommend an E60 because it's an all-around great car, the reality is they can be tempermental and painfully expensive when the warranty runs out. At a minimum, you're looking at 24K/year in mileage @ 100 miles a day for 5 days. That's assuming you start, drive to work, park. Repeat on the way home and never drive the car anywhere else. Of course that wouldn't be the case, so let's say you're gonna be pushing 30k/year. At this mileage rate, I'd forget about the V8s - you may be able to find a 545 nowadays for sub 30K, but I wouldn't. Go for the newest, lowest mileage 525 you can find and afford, then slap on an extended warranty (even if this takes you over your budget). You REALLY don't want an E60 unwarranted, unless you have some sizeable disposable income set aside.

To be quite honest, if finances are a concern coupled with high mileage, I'd recommend the M35 (though not the greatest mileage), or the RL (not the greatest styling, but not too bad on fuel). The Japanese do know how to make some pretty worry-free vehicles, and rarely have I met a Honda driver who is concerned about reliability past 100K. But, if those things aren't a consideration, then the E60 will place the most smiles on your enthusiast face.

5 Series 545i used is an easy choice. japenese cars don't have that true German car feel and get really boring really quickly. Dime a dozen too! More a chick car if you ask me! m35 AWD deal looks like a monster truck too....too high! A6 would be second choice but only in the 4.2

ABBMW, This info helps.

1. Been there - done that. Pounded the pavement commuting @ 150 mi/day for 5+ years in two 740i's.
2. Good news - actually pretty economically to operate day in day out ... averaging 23+ mpg
3. More good news - great ride ... quick, comfortable, secure handling ...
4. Now ... the bad news -- VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR and MAINTENANCE REQUIRED
5. More not so good news ... any car that approaches 100K+ miles on the odometer goes to hell in a handbasket for resale value.

Should the need to drive those miles fall upon me again would I do it in a BMW ... MAYBE. But to be honest, I'd be more inclined to sacrifice the driving qualities of a BMW for a commuter vehicle (say a year or two old Honda) ... and BUY a BMW for the weekends!

An E550 for $30K?? Only a scrapped one!

I've driven the latest gen RL. Might as well be driving an Accord. A Civic Si is waaaaay more fun!
