I'm trying to determine if I should purchase 19" or 20" wheels for my 550i. I lean more towards performance and ride quality rather than looks. But I've been told that even 19" wheels look somewhat small on this car. What do you guys think?

It's all subjective. I personally think 19" wheels with a lip looks too small on the E60. The 18'" that comes on the 530, 545, 550 all look like 19" because of no lip. I would rather stick with OEM wheels than go aftermarket 19".
I'm now at a point where I like to stick w/OEM wheels because I don't want that attention I used to get with big aftermarket wheels.
Take a look at the gallery section and look at the 19" and 20" wheels on there.
Good luck with your decision.

I agree. If you go 19inch then make sure it doesnt have a lip and it is a clean spoke wheel. 19inch does make the ride seem less heavy or sluggish compared to 20inch in my opinion.

I have 19's with a huge lip in the back, and I kinda regret it, it looks dinky. I think I will be switching to 20's with no lip or maybe a little. The 19's look alright, but just a little too small IMO. The E60 has a pretty big chassis and the 20's look like they fit better.
I thought Cidair's 21's look huge on his M5, but the more I look at it the more I like it. But I wouldn't put them on my car. I saw 22's on a white 645 (car for sale on ebay) and it looked wicked, and I believe it was lowered a little.

Size is in the eye of the beholder - I've got 19's and they don't look small to me - in fact I think they would look really daft any bigger.
However, some of the more modern (nicer) styles don't look so 'brash' and could could take an extra inch.
I saw an M5 yesterday and the wheels did look pukka - specially the drilled out brake discs (v cool)

Regardless of the "dinky" look, how is the ride with your current 19's? Is it relatively the same as the stock setup? Have you driven an e60 with 20's?
