My Ride: 2008 550i w/M-Tech, Sport and Cold Weather Pkg

Hey guys!
Just got my 2008 550i last week and actually bought it on a rainy day. Test drove the vehicle several times and all seemed to be on days when the wipers were on. The problem I have now (no warranty, 58k miles) is that the car has pretty bad wind noise above 35-40 mph. The Carfax was clean, so no accidents and the vehicle came from Florida with 20% tint all the way around, including a strip across the top of the windshield on the inside. When I pull the moonroof cover shut the wind noise goes down drastically. All door seals appear fine and everything that I can visibly see with regard to the moonroof and the moonroof operation seems tight. The two items I did notice, and I'm trying to get a pic of it uploaded, is that the trim piece across the top of the windshield on the outside looks old and is cracked and in fact has spots where the plastic has just fallen bit by bit off. It is the same thing across the top of the rear window as well. The side pillar seals and trim all look great but again these two plastic strips (seals) look horrible almost like they are sun baked and literally disintegrating little by little. I'm sure this is a great place to start but I posted this mainly to see if anyone else has run into this. I will have a windshield company replace, Safelite or someone along those lines. Waht do you guys think?

It's a well known problem for E60/61. You need to replace sunroof seal. Get BMW part 54107245551 and do it yourself. Make sure to google sunroof initialization steps once the seal is replaced.

Replacing the front and rear window seals are easy to DIY. They are actually just covers, not, seals. You dont need to remove the glass.
I found this video on YouTube for the rear cover. The front is a bit trickier, but doable.

The replacement seal is peel and stick. I replaced mine easily with a diy from this forum. pay attention to the advice for cutting it to the proper length. i cut mine about a 1/16th short and always worry it's going to leak because of it. After replacement the wind noise is unchanged with the sunroof cover open or closed. But I still have alot of wind noise in the car.
