15,035 miles so far and I love the SMG! I wouldn't want another car without it and I was previously driving manuals for the las 30 years.

7,500 miles on my 2005 545 SMG. I LOVE it. I can't begin to express how much I enjoy driving this car. My commute to work is almost 1 hour each way, and every minute is a joy. Luckily for me, it's not much stop-n-go traffic... but even when it is, it's not bad.

Technology is expensive.

Think about it, the price difference between stick and SMG is $1500 (retail, 530i). The cost of manual transmission should be around $2,000. So $5000 including labor sounds about right.

I just don't know how much the clutch replacement would cost for SMG. Right now, the dealer will charge about $750 for the stick shift. I hope it would be the same for SMG because since SMG is basically a stick, then replacing clutch will be eminent.

I'm sure the clutch will eventually wear on an SMG but I would think that it wouldn't wear as fast due to the precision downshifts, etc.

The only things I can think of where you can do intentional harm to the SMG clutch would be using launch control or holding the car on a hill with the gas pedal (like you can in an automatic) instead of the brake.

Question... When the SMG is in automatic mode, it's more jerky than the step? As in, it almost feels like someone is shifting manually?

It all depends on how you drive the car. My wife is really careful and drives cautiously. When the car shifts I can't really tell. Like in an auto. However, when I tried it out, I could feel the shifts. I only used it one time though. Screw the auto feature. Unless you have a wife who needs to drive it from time to time.
