My Ride: '06 530i, '07 C280 4matic, '98 ML320
Ballast is attached/mounted on the bottom of the headlight housing. To see the ballast, you will have to remove the headlight from the car, flip it upside down, you will see this...
The smaller square thing is the control module for adaptive-headlight controller (ALC). I corrected this.

Then to complicate the things further, half of my online research stats my takes the D2S. The other half states it takes the D1S. The owner's manual states take it to the "stealership" for the fear of "High Voltage Hazard" And the stealership states they are not which one I have; bring it in because they will have to look at it.

If you are willing to remove the headlight and familiarize yourself with the car parts, you can save a lot of money; otherwise, take some lotion to the dealer :-) pun intended.

The type of xenon (D1S) is printed very clearly on the ballast as well as the igniter. Look at the yellow sticker in the picture I posted - bottom right hand corner.
If you are willing to remove the headlight and familiarize yourself with the car parts, you can save a lot of money; otherwise, take some lotion to the dealer :-) pun intended.
