Did I understand right that the previous owner has spent $18K in stripping and replacing parts on the vehicle and all that is left is getting the engine running and coding some of the replacement modules?

I'm just curious. Great decision on your part, as since you have doubts, it's definitely not something for you.

One of our boat motors hydro locked last year cylinders were full of water. We ended up fixing it for about 500 bucks. We did a full leak down test before we got all the parts to make sure the block wasn't cracked.

Undervalued by $20,000? Is it free? A 2005 X5 isn't exactly worth a lot these days... Wholesale on that piece is 16K to 18K.

I wouldn't touch it.

They are going for $40,000 to $50,000 in Australia so it might be worth it

Hmmmm...

LA:

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...008374700.html

That's a V8, fully loaded.

You could ship the thing for $2500, pay import fees, and still be ahead.

I'd keep looking.

Typically in a hydro lock you have bent or broken rods. If there are no holes in the block they likely bent. The other problem is water doesn't compress so when the piston is being forced up it stops but the crank keeps going. This is when the rod bends, however us also sometimes pulverizes the bearing on the crank. If you smoke the crank too it's basically pointless. If its one or two rods you can get away with just pulling the crank off and swapping out the rods that were hydro locked.

In the end a used motor is almost always the best / cheapest solution.

OOnly thing with importing is we are right hand drive hear in Australia and it wouldn't meet Australian standards as they r a lot stricter the in the usa
