I think it's one of the coolest things around...but totally non essential - a bit like upgraded alloys...all it does is give you individuality and a wow factor for your mates.

I have driven one with it and have to say it is brilliant. The point is though I wouldn't pay for it as a new option!! It's not worth the money for all the things mentioned.

On the other hand if there were 2 used cars for sale in the colour and spec I wanted, I would get the one with HUD if it was just ?250 or so more.

These things don't add much to resale, but at over ?900 in the UK a new car option it's a rip off...

Your mates can't see it tho.......??

As I would never buy a brand new BMW in any case I can't disagree about not paying for it as an option on a new one for sure

I'm looking at a used 2008 550i, but it doesn't have HUD. Everything else is a match to what I want...but no HUD. I've heard everyone say how much they love the HUD, so I'm wondering if you'd consider buying a car without the HUD? Just looking for opinions.
In my opinion, HUD is the type of option that if you never had it would not be a critical factor in making a decision on a car without one. Once you've had it, however, everything changes - or at least it did for me. It is a great option and worth the money it costs. It allows you to keep your eyes on the road and is particularly helpful if you have NAV where it shows the turns. Right now for me, it would be a must have on my future cars.

Too true, but they only have to sit in the drivers seat and be wowed for those few seconds befoe you oik 'em out, especially when they realise that they can't see it and you keep going on about it...

In the UK, it costs the equivalent of $1300 at today's exchange rates. It could have been as bad as $2100 dollars a while back. So it really ain't worth that much - I doubt even you guys in the states would paid that much for it.

Incidentally, how much does it costs there before tax's?

I'm waiting for the really good ones of the future, where it's in proper 3D and the animations/arrows actually point you into the lane you should be in rather than left or right..... Now that would be cool...

Yes, if you wear polarized sunglasses, the HUD may become useless in daylight. With some brands of polarized sunglasses it disappears. Plus $1200 can be used better elsewhere.

I have HUD and I LOVE IT!! True that those who don't have it say you don't need it and those that have it are in love with it. My suggestion... If possible drive one with HUD and then drive one without. If you think its more of a distraction when driving, then don't get it. But you'll never know unless you try.

So can it be retrofitted on the car? I wonder how much the dealer would charge for that? I'm guessing high dollar as you'd have to get a new windshield as well. Hmmm...

Yet another thing to debate (besides the 550i vs M5!!).

Thanks for everyone's input!

Yeah I hate to say it... Especially if this is a really great deal you are about to pass up... But I couldn't live without it now... Haha Seriously though I can't even remember the last time I actually looked at my speedometer other than glancing at my RPM guage for a split second and even that sucks when you know the M5's have the RPM guage on the HUD

I'm just way too spoiled now with this thing... I didn't even know it existed until I drove my car home... I was like WOAH! Then when I used the nav for the first time..... I almost came in my pants. HAHA Just kidding... But seriously.

+1 on this. you don't know what are you missing unil you have one. Like Jrowe, I almost never look at my suntilpeedo any more. Hay I strugle when I'm driving my wife's toyota mainly because I have to look at the speedostruggleToyota now.
For me this is way too cool to not have it any more. I would pass the deal and wait for another year if I have to but MUST have HUD !!!!
