the label clearly shows H rated M+S tyres are meant for this car, KAF]

I think you will find that M + S Tyres are not the same as winter tyres.

M+S must be so marked on the sidewall, cold weather tyres are not.

Indeed.

"M+S

M+S (Mud and Snow) tyres are those with a tread pattern and sometimes compound specifically designed to perform well in poor road conditions. An M&S tyre will usually have a high negative void ratio in order to achieve this.

Some M+S tyres rely solely on the aggressive tread pattern to achieve this extra performance whilst others will have the addition of a specially designed rubber compound. In general terms this different compound is usually reserved for out and out winter tyres."

I have managed already 2 winters in Finland with my H -speed class Contis (with which I was driving in Germany). They seem to work unexpectedly well, and the only moment when I have to be extra careful is of course cristal clear ice, when this a little bit too hard tire compound comes to its limit of traction. But normal winter roads; no problems !

Erm as this is a guy from the UK I think Id better point this out :

You do not need winter tyres for the UK. I just had my PS2s replaced with another set of PS2's. It rarely snows here and if it does the roads are cleared relatively quickly. All season tyres are absolutely fine. Just get some ps2's or whatnot and you will be fine.
They are also rated at Y (180mph)

Good point; however, on the same label - which I still can't upload, but there's an identical one in your car - it shows quite clearly that "normal" tyres should be Y, not V rated. Which makes sense, as V rated tyres are up to 240 km/h (149 mph), while the 535d is limited at 250 km/h (155 mph).

So, if your insurance company wanted to cause trouble, you'd be in exactly the same spot with V as with H rated winters.

I personally doubt a) the insurance would and b) it could anyway refuse a payment, particularly if you told them you were going to fit winter tyres.

Finally managed to upload the picture - it has to be resized to 1024 x 768 max before it is uploadable...

Standard tyres "must" be Y rated; M+S can be H or V rated. No mention of "winter" as such.

There used to be a regulation or habit in Germany that if the tyres are speed rated below the maximum speed of the vehicle there should be a sticker on the dashboard with a reminder of what the safe speed is for the tyre
Still is!

Luckily not here.

Strange that there's no M+S option on 16 inch wheels specified on the label in your photo. I would have thought that would have been the most popular winter tyre size.

Not really, when you think that a 16 inch wheel won't fit around a 535d's brake discs...
