V rated winter tyres are not easy to come by, especially in the UK.

It has been suggested to me that it is OK to use H rated on a 530D Tourer. (225/50 x 17)

Is this correct?

As long as you don't plan on keeping speeds above 130 mph on a sustained basis, don't see why not.

Isn't it a legal/safety issue ? I think you need a tyre at the manufacturers rating or above ? In a bad accident, I would have thought an incorrect tyre will be a no no from the liability perspective ?

Forgot to say - on E39 at least, BMW did specify H-rated winter tyres.

Works just fine.

If you plan to travel for more 100mph in winter, you're not safe whether you're using H or Z rated tires. Drive slow in winter and any winter tires will be fine.

I'm running H as well, it's enough for winter.

Check out some Bridgestone LM22's they are V rated. I would suggest to call your insurance company to find out about running a lower speed rated tire. Various country's have different laws.

Well, allow me to point out that winter in Finland is likely to be a little more challenging than in Wiltshire...

But I agree. If you need winter tyres, then doing 160 kph is plenty enough.
