18" snows will look better but won't provide as much wheel protection from potholes, etc. It's really a personal preference though -- I'm using a 17" setup on my car (which is minus 2" from the summer 19" 'ers) because I bought the package as a minus 1" setup from my 2004 car.

Although it does look a little funnier going from 19" to 17", my wheels are likely to survive the winter (as they did the last three...)
Did you add the TPS to the old rims or are you living with the warning? I am selling my old rims and someone with a new 550 is interested in them.
Thanks.

I just changed over my 166 style 19's with PS2's (which are like sliks in the snow) to my original equipment 18's with the Bridgestone RE 050A rump flaps. Ill see how these go and get snows like Blizzaks put on if necessary. Actually started snowing in chicago Saturday while i was in the garage changing them.
Don't think you'll be pleased with the performance. RE050As are max performance summer tires. You're no better off than driving on your PS2s.

I had the dealer add the sensors on the winter setup. I'll likely do the future changeovers myself now since the sensors are installed...

I have the OEM wheels staggered on my 535xi and bought the Dunlop winter sport M3's staggered in 18". I have 245's in the front and 275's in the rear. The ride is a little softer but I'm enjoying it. These tires really grip the road and cost me $950 shipped to my home from tirerack.com .

I hope that helps,

Rick..

Hello everyone,

I'm sure you have seen a post like this 100 times but I can't seem to find the answer in this forum. What are the proper sizes for purchasing new front and rear rims with winter tires. What do you guys recommend 17" or 18"? Rims from BMW or Tire Rack? Thanks.

Here is my take. Tire rack has good deals but the winter rims they offer don't look good and anything attractive are expensive. I recommend getting some 18 BMW replicas from one of the Ebay tire stores. OE wheels, lakeshore wheels and etc. Order the rims and order the tires from tire rack. Just make sure to get the tires mounted and balanced from a good shop, $35 to $40 per wheel. $500 for wheels another $1000 for tires. Your looking at $1600 but you'll have a nicer setup than paying $1300 for some ASA type package recommended by the tire rack IMHO.

If I install rims w/out the TPMS sensors will I get a chime going off every 2 minutes? Or just a warning light on the dash? Thanks

several warning lights, no chime AFAIK
I wouldn?t want to deal with that for 3 plus months

Thanks J.
Lights I can deal with but a chiming sound for 3 months would drive me nuts
I'm off to pick up a set of snows in CT

My 245/40R18 Dunlop M3s performed admirably earlier today in the two inches of snow we received.
