Hello everyone,
I'm sure you have seen a post like this 100 times but I can't seem to find the answer in this forum. What are the proper sizes for purchasing new front and rear rims with winter tires. What do you guys recommend 17" or 18"? Rims from BMW or Tire Rack? Thanks.

The Tire Rack's web site should show all the proper options available to you. If you want, you can call them and talk to a human as well.
In addition, take a look at this recent thread:

18" snows will look better but won't provide as much wheel protection from potholes, etc. It's really a personal preference though -- I'm using a 17" setup on my car (which is minus 2" from the summer 19" 'ers) because I bought the package as a minus 1" setup from my 2004 car.
Although it does look a little funnier going from 19" to 17", my wheels are likely to survive the winter (as they did the last three...)

2005 545i, Titanium Silver, Grey Leather, Cold Weather Package, Premium Sound, Sport Package, Automatic, Navigation, Satellite Radio,
I used 17" wheels (w/ LM22 Bridgestone Blizzak tires) on my 2005 and they worked ok in dry and great in snow & ice. I now have 18" wheels (w/ LM25 Bridgestone Blizzak tires) on my 2008 and they perform much better in the dry. I drove them yesterday in very lighjt snow and they were excellent.

Snows are on about 1/3 of the year. If you want the dry handling/snow perf/look, all to be there, get 18's; they work great, not to mention its a good excuse to upgrade to 19's for summer.

My Ride: 2008 535xi / Platinum Grey / Black leather / Step Auto / Sport / Premium / Cold weather / 18" wheels / Logic 7 / Comfort / ipod / Navigation / Fold Down Rear Seats / Rear Airbags / Sirius SAT / Spoiler / Extended Clear bra / Bluetooth. (Previously owned a 2002 sport 525I Loaded).
On order: 535xi Platnium Grey with Black interior, Step Auto, Sports package, Premium package, Cold weather package, 18" wheels, Logic 7, Comfort access, ipod adapt, Navigation, Sat radio, Rear spoiler, Extended Clear coat bra.
I have the OEM wheels staggered on my 535xi and bought the Dunlop winter sport M3's staggered in 18". I have 245's in the front and 275's in the rear. The ride is a little softer but I'm enjoying it. These tires really grip the road and cost me $950 shipped to my home from tirerack.com .
I hope that helps,
Rick..

I just changed over my 166 style 19's with PS2's (which are like sliks in the snow) to my original equipment 18's with the Bridgestone RE 050A rump flaps. Ill see how these go and get snows like Blizzaks put on if necessary. Actually started snowing in chicago Saturday while i was in the garage changing them.
