Winter Tire Recommendations 545i Sport
I got the Michelins; the Tire Rack advisor said they were a little better than Blizzaks in the dry, and almost as good in the snow. If this is true I'd hate to drive the Blizzaks in the dry. I put them on Thanksgiving day, and kind of hated them as the car seemed to wander on dry roads more than it already does. This week it started to snow, and I have to say with these tires the 545 is an absolutely fabulous winter car! Heated seats and steering wheel, and stable as can be in light snow and on ice. No, you can't defy the laws of physics, but I have no need for all wheel drive with these tires. Of course BMW's 50/50 weight distribution, along with DSC help greatly as well.
The coming weeks will tell what the car can do in deep snow, but I'm extremely impressed on ice. I recommend the Michelins.

Michelin Pilot Alpin Z2. Tenacious grip, quiet and smooth ride. However if the snow is deeper than the ground clearance, not so much - been there.
Dont use DSC, start in 3rd.
I just put my WS-70s on and man, it's almost scary driving at highway speeds on the dry. When the wind blows, it almost feels like my back end is sliding out a bit, and if I move the wheel back and forth twice it feels like I'm wobbling back and forth like crazy. With my summers on wind gusts would never effect my car.
I had a set of WS-50s on my E46 for 2-3 years and never felt this bad. I expected some mushy handling, as I saw from my WS-50s, but not have some blowing wind actually cause me to think I am sliding.
Anyone else get this?

Alignment was fine; I put my summers back on yesterday to make a few highway runs to compare and it tracked 100% normal. I've got about 500 miles on them, so hopefully they will be fully broken in soon and improve drivability. Or at least wait until they wear down a bit. Other than that, they seem great in the snow/ice.

Like I mentioned, I had a set of WS-50s on my E46 for years and since everyone said these were so much better, I at least expected the same performance out of them.

Hmm thats odd, I've been on the thruway while its snowing and windy as hell doing 80+ and my car with ws-70's is almost glued to the road. I've got less that 500 miles on mine. Make sure whoever put them on got the rotation right.
