well we've been newbies once as well

but really guys, there are no actual tyre pressure sensors on the car....
it is a computation based on the wheel rotation and size....
it monitors only a leak or a sudden decrease of the pressure, not an actuall tyre pressure reading
Sorry, Mr. over 1800 posts, but they rally have sensors on there now (started ~ 1/2 year ago).
The newbie with only ~ 780 posts.....

Be careful - US cars have sensors in the stems since '07 MY; I am not sure about non-US, and given that the US change was dictated by regulations, it is very possible that they are not fitted outside the US. I think a call to a good dealer (parts department?) would do much to clarify things.

BTW - the "old" system monitors rotation speed. Not pressure. Deflated wheels have a smaller diameter, so rotate faster.

Guys i did it...again

Went to the dealer and well he said that they work only with Dunlop for winter (winter sport m3 respectively) and thet for an 18" rim (135M) he can offer only a 245/50 tire. Well because of some circumstances i went with the dealer offer and bought 4 tires. I asked him how can this be and how can a tire that has the same width as the summer tire, be recomanded with such a taller sidewall (considering that my oem summers are 245/40). And how come it won't affect anything in the car...speedo readings, handling and all other stuff.

He just answered: I don't know what to say...all i know if BMW recomands it then it's more than enough for us.

What do you think? Have i made a mistake?

PS: Tires are still dismounted since it's pretty warm...still.

That's strange !

My dealer told me I needed 245/40/18 Dunlop m3s on my 135m rims. I don't know why they told you 50 ?
You'd think it would be best to stick with the original size.

I agree, stick with the correct specifications. My dealer told me go either with current setup 245/40/18 or
default 545i 225/50/17. Went with the second at the end.

olli_535d;

"The winter tyres on my 135 rims are 225/45/18 which is exact conversion size for the 245/40 runflat summers. I chose 225 for slightly better ability to cut through slush and water."

BetterMakeWay:

"But hmm doesn't a 245/40 tire have a 98mm sidewall and a 225/45 a 101.25mm one?"

andy545:

"My dealer told me go either with current setup 245/40/18 order 545i 225/50/17."

The Overall Tyre Diameters are:

225/55 16" = 654 mm
225/50 17" = 657 mm
225/45 18" = 660 mm
245/40 18" = 653 mm

So the largest difference is about 1 %!

But I still do not understand the sensor thing.

In EU the E60 system works with the ABS sensors and the computer.

Adding some Overall Tyre Diameters:

245/35 19" = 654 mm
275/30 19" = 648 mm !!!
