what is it with you USA guys not using winter tires? IMHO it is a must in winter, no matter RW and AWD (4x4) always winter tires. And this is not because of snow only but because of low winter temperatures, winter tires are made from different content so they are much softer while freezing so they still stick well to the road. summer tires in freeze are hard as a rock = poor contact with road and bad breaking.
only once in autumn I was late on changing from summer to winter ... OMG I could not drive with 245 summer tires on snow eventhoug it was Audi Quattro

I think the average USA consumer was brainwashed years ago into thinking that "all season" tires are all you need in winter. (What a bunch of BS those things are.)

Also, people here think if you have front-wheel drive, you are fine. These same people won't even buy a BMW because it's rear-wheel drive! Now, everyone just gets a big honking SUV so they can end up in a ditch when they figure out that they can't stop any better than anyone else...
