My Ride: 2006 BMW M5
Well, I dont know about Block Heater for BMW. I have been driving my 545i in extreme conditions and it runs pretty fine (amazing!) . there were some days with -40C (-50C with windchill). Believe me just use 0W40 oil Castrol Synec.

I think, there is not defa for Northamerica. I don't know why. At BMW dealers don't have them either. Maybe you just purchase it overseas.

I also use Defa blockheater in my 545i
As a target value, everything less that 20deg celsius can be considered as "cold start" conditions from an engine wear perspective.
I use it 3h before start during winter, and 2h before the rest of the seasons.

here in Canada most traditional block heaters don't have an on or off people just plug in at night or during work and it basically runs all night or all day long. Some parkades will cycle there outlets to only turn on for 1 hr every 3 hrs or so.
