My e39 is too slow also. Rain-x makes a windshield washer fluid that has helped me a lot. The problem I have had with rain-x that you have to apply manually is that it never seems to be applied when you need it. The washer fluid rain-x can be applied whenever you need it just by washing the windshield and by doing so periodically your always covered. The stuff is awesome and I think makes driving much safer. You can drive without your windshield wipers on in a downpour and still see great.
The rain sensing wipers on the e39 and I suspect with the e60 will only engage at full slow when the windshield is wet. For high speed wipe you have to engage the last click on the stalk.

I am sorry, but those things are SLOOOW. Yes, in manual mode they're a little faster than in auto, but still, they do not handle heavy rain very good.
It is a shame because sometimes the road conditions are OK but the wipers are the reason i have to slow down.

Try using Stoners Invisible Glass its great stuff to clean your windows and the water sheaths off very well.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.

This means that when that rain begins to firm up (ice and snow) there'll be a lot less cold metal surfaces for it to stick to, and then raise the blades off the glass surface. These wipers appear to be all plastic and very slim in their design.
I figure I'll be able to comment on this authoratatively in about a week...

Hey guys, at max speed the wipers move about as fast as it possible is.
When the rain is pouring down, there's not much to be done.
Sometimes the nature just is too strong, deal with it!
