I believe they said the windshield was around 700 to 750 dollars. The impact point of the rock was no larger than a pin prick. The crack has grown to approx. 18 inches.

Its a shame you guys don't have a UK insurance policy, we can have unlimited windscreens replacements provided we pay the ?50 ($96) excess

No HUD. BMW windshield. Glass Doctor. Believe it or not, they have replaced more 'shields than my dealer.

I had mine done at a well known screen place here in the UK, in fact it was the first one they had ever done and they made a right pigs ear of it. They couldn't get the (new) side trim piece to fit properly on the passenger side and it still sticks up slightly now.

Just make sure when you pick the car up that these pieces are correctly installed

Mine had to have the trims refitted several times and finally they refitted the screen due to an incomplete seal. My fitter (Autoglass) told me that the E60 is very difficult to get right and they have had lots of issues with wind noise after chaning the screen.

I'm not sure but I think my dealer actually sub-contracts windshield replacements out to mobile replacement companies like glass doctor. What's nice is that they do the replacement in the BMW shop so there are techs there to help with model specific issues, etc. but the guy with the windshield experience does the majority of the work...

The older 5 series had rampant windshield replacements as well. Something I learned from some friends was that dealers varied wildly on the cost. Some were like what you mention, while others were in the $150 range. Shop around.

I had this problem last week. No visible sign of any impact yet had the long crack. Dealer claimed there was a pinhead sized impact so no warranty replacement. I could not win the discussion about warranty replacement even with the info about windshield cracks previously posted on this board (those of you in Houston probably know the dread of dealing with Momentum BMW), so forked over $450 for replacement. It couldn't wait, the crack was right across the driver's side at eye level and did impact road vision a little bit (and was growing at an alarming rate).

I had a similar crack on my windshield a few weeks ago. There was a tiny chip right above the crack, so the first dealer I took it to said it was a rock and no warranty coverage. Then I took it to the dealer where I bought the car (Sterling) and the service manager suggested I wait until a BMW rep is available on site. I made an appointment so the rep could look at it and sure enough, it turned out to be a STRESS crack. The rep said since the chip was not on the crack he would cover it under warranty.

Hope this helps.

My Ride: E60 "Stripper" Now C6 "Stripper"
Question

Is there such a thing as clear bra to protect the windshield?

Mine was replaced under warranty (stress crack) after the service manager gave the windshield a once over and was unable to find any stone chips.

I just had my windshield replaced by the dealer (warranty) about 3 weeks ago. The cost I would have had to pay was $438.00. I am not sure if that is discounted but it is pretty typical I'm told.
