It actually makes some sense, the added friction of the thicker (or more grabby) window going up and down could easily stress the window motors leading to premature failure. In general, any modification that leads to premature failure should void the warranty for that part.

No. The motor can handle the security windows, they are double as thick and therefore double as heavy, without failure.

That may be true, but at least in the US - if the dealer can make a good argument that a modification caused the direct failure of a part, regardless of durability projections that can be inferred from other applications, the warranty will not be honored.

But it's not the dealer giving the warranty, it's BMW...

Very true Iceman, but as we are finding out here the U.S. with the cracked windscreens, dealers are free to have their own interpretation of the warranty, rightly or wrongly. I could very easily see how dealer who does not uphold the level of customer service that BMW AG wants, could point to the tinting and blame that, not the mechanism. Just as a dealer can look at the cracked windscreen, even though there is no damage or road debris impact, and say sorry you must have done this, we will not cover under warranty. It is happening to people here, folks have paid out of pocket for cracked windscreens that were clearly the result of some sort of design stress.

And no never heard of this one. I asked my dealer and they referred me to someone who handled high jobs like the Huper Optik I got. No mention of it voiding the warranty on anything.

So if the dealer is doing it it's legal... I see... The dealers are trying to rip you off, aren't they?

I got my car from the dealer and it already had tinted windows pre-installed by the dealer himself.

but just in case, I had called in BMW NA and no it doesn't void any warranty given by BMW. So, go ahead and enjoy the tints.. the car actually will look much classier w/the tinted windows.

Thicker ya... by an amount that the motor wont know the difference. and added friction??? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Properly clean tint film is smother than ever! So you're saying the dust that is collected on the window outside is killing the motor when we open our windows... obviously the dust causes more friction than tint does.

Thats what the anti-trap function is there for if theres too much resistance it will stop and retract back.

A thick window tint is only about 3 mils thick.
If that were enough to affect the BMW window motor, then there would be a lot of people with broken windows.
