I too don't understand the don't disconnect the battery warning.

The battery often needs to be disconnected for lots of reasons. I'd just remove the Negative side only and leave the positive connected.

Every year my car stays unused for about 2 months during the winter and I have no problems (touch wood) when I return - even though I don't disconnect the battery.

simple....if your battery is less than 4 or 5 years old, you should have no problems with 3 weeks. If you often leave your car uncranked for weeks at a time, you should most definitely get a battery maintainer...

I would not make it a practice of disconnecting the battey. This will kill power to the computer, and I've known many people who have had issues (not huge isssues) get things back right after doing this...doesn't happen to all people all the time, but it does to some, some of the time. Please don't ask me why it happens cause I have no idea....but it does...just letting you know.

A practical reason for not disconnecting the battery is that it makes it a bit cumbersome to properly lock the car.
I would probably go to the dealer to buy a trickle charger and try it before I leave.

I go away for about 4 weeks every year. 3rd E60, never had a problem just getting in the car and starting it when I got back.
