It had just begun to snow as my wife returned from a shopping trip this AM. She was on her side of the road going about 20-25 mph and an idiot in an Exploder (aka: Ford Explorer) lost it coming in the other direction. She (the Exploder driver) crossed over into my wife's lane going perhaps 30-40 mph and head-oned my 530xiT (E61). You can see the damage from the photos - the cops said it was a total and my SA said that even if it was fixed I would not want to drive it. (See the pictures) The Cops told my wife that the crash was the other driver's fault and three other drivers (who were in cars behind my wife) volunteered to testify to confirm that my wife was the innocent party.

Thank God for BMW safety features and the nasty bell that makes one keep the safety belt on. Otherwise, my wife who was shaken up, but able to come home could have been seriously injured. She appears fine, but I am sure will have a sore body in the AM.

The other driver ended up the Exploder's back seat and was taken to the hospital unconscious. I hope she will recover.

In the event, I guess we are on the lookout for another E61 ? anyone know of a good one similar to mine in Southern New England.

Wow! Sorry to hear your wife was in an accident, but so glad she is OK. That's obviously a hard hit, and the passenger compartment looks fine. Bummer about the car, but what matters most came home in one piece. Best of luck. -Calvin

wow, glad to here your wife is ok, hope the same is true for the other driver.

as for the car, safety is something alot of us dont consider when purchasing a vehicle. usually its style, speed or comfort. nice to know that the bmw gives you all of that plus the piece of mind to know youll survive an accident like this.

Glad your wife came out relatively unscathed, and that it seems to be pretty clear-cut where the blame is concerned! We truly drive amazing cars that give their all so we can walk away when perhaps we should not be able to! BTW, you appear to have had another accident in the first picture it seems an adult man has crashed head-on into the car again!!

Wow... roads in Pittsburgh looked alot like that today, and my wife is driving our boys around in our 535Xit. I'm sure glad we no longer own an Exploder.

Best of luck for an uneventful weekend.

Thanks for posting the incredible pictures.

Glad, she's ok ... although I read somewhere that BMW got less than stellar results for side impact.

BTW, the police car in the background is an explorer. I bet he's not thrilled looking at the other explorer and how it held up in a crash.
