Why does everyone here call it the R6 engine

In all BMW literature relating to the 630i that has it it is refered to as the N52

In an email sent to me by BMW SA, they refer to the R6 engine as "NG6" engine (New Generation 6 Cylinder Valvetronic II engine).

So it seems there are many different codes/names for this engine.

Im starting to think that NG6 and R6 reffer to the new family of 6 cylinder engines, and that N52 is the 3.0L engine in the family

The 2.5 will be NXX

and the planned 2.3 Nxx

but they are all from the NG6 / R6 family

The letter R or V states for the aligment of the engine cylinders

R6 means that is 6 cylinders in a Row arrangement as opposed to V6 which is "V" aligment of the engine

R6- cylinders in a row one behind each other in a straight line

V6 - cylinders are in a angle one against another in a letter V shape aligment, 3 cylinders on the left , 3 on the right

As earlier said the engine (gasoline or diesel) type in a BMW can be R4, R6, V8, V10 or V12.

But then the engines has their own code. The "old" R6 engines had the M54 code. Then new ones (starting from April this year) are code N52.

The current V8 4.4 litre engine goes under the code N62 and the current R4 family engines N42.

For example my car is a E60 525iA with a R6-type N52 engine.

A lot of the initial press releases from BMW called it the R6. I like this 12 page article on the new BMW engines...
