why does it start from 2nd gear,not first????

You cannot screw up the tranny in DS manual gearchange. The car prevents you from doing this.. I few days ago I was shifting back for a turn and the steptronic didn't accept that because I was in to high rpm. So no change things will brake down if you do that or make a mistake.

I never noticed that the car starts in 2nd gear. I'll try to find it out myself when I drive the car..

You are correct. Also you can start in first gear by shifting it down to first. I do this. As I am approaching a red light I shift down through the gears to help slow the car down. I shift all the way down to first (don't do this unless you are under like 15MPH or else the rev limiter will prevent the engine from over revving and switch to 2nd.

You can not damage the car in either D or DS as the rev limiter will not allow the transmission to switch into to low of a gear.

You guys that are not using the manual shifter in step. are really missing out on a lot of fun.
I am really hooked on it. It breaks up my long commute ( 140 miles roundtrip)..I had a "93 325i, and the clutch really had a lot of resistance when pressing down on it as the car got some miles on it. I guess I am not a purest, but I can do without clutching.
I use it on the highways I travel when the traffic is light. I cruise in 6th gear and get much better gas milage, but really get a bang out of dropping to 4th and 3rd gears when passing or merging on to the hway. The 5451 responds like a jet. Feel in full control. Like nothing I have experienced before. Makes my commute a delight and keeps it from getting boring.
Try it. Think you will feel the same.

I'm with Netjaz, I love shifting with step, something about downshifting into the corners to really get a jump out of them .... woooohooo , I love this car !!

When I am in stop start traffic I always shift to Steptronic because it defaults to second, no need to engage first (as it would do in D or DS) for stop start driving.

By the way had fun in DS this morning going to the airport early with not much traffic, gave a guy in an M Coupe quite a run for his money he was totally amazed what the diesel could do (of course he did not know about my Schnitzer ECU!!!).
