It's for breakdown prevention purposes. You can start and drive 2nd gear up to 60mph without damage the engine. If you start and drive 1st gear all the way to just 50mph, your engine will be damaged easily.
It's BMW intention to keep it start at 2nd gear.

maybe I'm wrong but as far as I know steptronic will not allow you to overrev the car in any gear................................my guess is that the car starts in second primarily to save fuel consumption................but i could be wrong

SMG II on M3 also starts for the second gear in automatic mode, and also in manual mode, when stopping the car, in slow-shifting DriveLogic programs, it will go into second, not into first. I was also puzzled at first, but judging things with the power of the engine and the violent changes of the gearbox it is understandable...

CAVEAT: I don't have a steptronic so I could be wrong.

Is there a "winter mode" for your car? I understand that cars with lots of torque start from 2nd gear to reduce wheel spin when grip is low.

while on the topic of Steptronic.....

is there a way to go back to DS mode after you have shifted gears manually?

With Audi Tiptronic in full auto mode, when you use the paddle to shift (not DSG) the gears...and if either the car comes to a stop or driven at a constant speed after x secs, the tranny will go back to full auto mode. I thought that's quite brilliant.

So just wondering if there's a better way to go back to DS mode after we shift manually...

yes I'm too lazy to row the shift column !!

Believe it or not, I've never tried shifting the steptronic manually. The most I did was to move the shifter to DS. Somehow I get this bad feeling that if I shift manually, I'll screw up the car...lol.

Btw, this is the first car I own that has this steptronic type auto.
