Most of the time they don't even develop the technology themselves, they just integrate it into their products. The quality of the integration is where they differentiate their version.
These days, most automakers buy (or license) technology from 3rd parties like Bosch, ZF, GM etc. Sometimes they pay a premium for exclusive rights for a fixed period of time. BMW (and Lexus) both do this a lot.

IMHO, this self-park stuff is technology for technology's sake - the park warning system in my 545i is enough for anyone who is not blind.
Fluffy options like the Active cruise and sonar parking are pretty wimpy. The auto park is not different.
Its all wussified until you order it on a car and then its like "I wouldn't order another car without it!!!! with lots of funny cut ikons!
