I've had this 2006 Range Rover for a week now and the wheels still shine. No brake dust. And this thing has good brakes and it has to haul down 5400 pounds. What's the deal? BMW designed this thing from the ground up. Brakes included. Why no dust?

The brakes on your BMW were designed to perform for a sports car application. The brakes on your Rover were not. You can buy aftermarket pads for your BMW that will create less dust, but it will cost you in the performance category. Me, I'd rather clean my wheels.

BMW developed their brake pads in a partnership with a little known company:

In a way it is a little annoyin' but yes the more softer the brake pads the more brake dust, but the more braking force/performance. The tougher the pads, less brake dust but less performance. I think that the softer the less lifetime for the brake pads!
I don't mind at all!

Less life for the rotors too. I run -10 track compound pads on my Vette and I go through rotors (unable to be turned must get new ones) every 3k miles or so.

I also drive that car at 8/10 or higher all the time. No reason to be out in it if I'm not hammering on it. I've left seat-belt-shaped bruises on the chests of unsuspecting passengers whose eyeballs were almost pulled out of their sockets from the braking G forces!

Offtopic But... How do you like your range rover? I just got a range rover sport last friday. The sport drives pretty well. No active stearing and more body roll though.

Well it's obviously a completely different vehicle than the E60 philosophically and drives as such. But it is awesome. The BMW genes show through in many ways, starting with lots of common electronics and controls. It's my wife's daily driver. It's not fast but it is perfectly adequate for her needs. More body roll than BMW sedan of course, but it is very smooth and quiet and the ride is comfortable, not at all jarring or SUV-like in the way a Suburban, for example, drives. I like to think of it as the love child between a 750iL and a M1 Abrams tank

Hey, if you have to drive an SUV (or in the case of my wife, WANT to drive an SUV) you might as well go for the mac daddy of them all.

And, for better or worse, this thing gets serious looks in a way that my E60 does not.

I'm guessing that some of it has to so with the brake duct cooling that blows air on to the brakes thus blowing the dust, which gets attracted to the wheels (uh, or I'm just drinking too much )
