I would really like to know why my 2004 bmw 530i is only getting 11 miles to the gallon. I told the guys at the shop to check the gas tank out. They told me they didn't find any problems. Can someone please let me know what could be the possible reasons for such low gas mileage per gallon? Thanks.

Maybe bad O2 or airflow sensors?

Is your emergency brake on? OK, sorry for the smart ass comment. Since Gas mileage is so dependent on driving and the computer mpg calculation is so often incorrect, I would do the following to determine if you really have a problem.

First of all check the mpg the old fashion way. Fill up and set your trip to 0. Take a long freeway drive if possible, where you can get on the freeway and go at a fairly consistent speed. If possible, drive a couple of hundred miles. Fill the tank the same way and calculate your mpg.

On a 530i, I would expect that you would be seeing about 30 mpg. That will tell you if you really have a problem or not.

If you're in so cal, could be becasue you blasting your A/C (it's been really hot out here)

In all honestly there are a lot of variables here. Your driving style aside from multiple engine components. There are a few threads regarding low gas mileage, have you tried running a search on it? GL...

I get 11 MPG all the time in my 550i, city driving, heavy right foot. It does sound off for a 530 though.

I get 11 mpg on my 545i SMG in city driving. On the highway, it's much better. Mid 20s.
