I'm suprised about the lag because every article I've read about this engine says no lag.
Everything I have read said the motor in the 335/535 had very little to no lag. I do remember one early article (M/T I think) that mentioned some lag was present. Every turbo car will have lag. BMW has done it's best to minimize the lag. As good a job as BMW has done with this motor, driving a turbo 6 in the 535 after driving the v8 in the 545/550 will further enhance the presence of the turbo lag to the driver. So stepping up to the 535 from a 535/530 will be a no brainier upgrade. However going from a 545/550 to a 535 is a downgrade. Maybe this is why BMW (and others) charge more for their V8 models.

When I did some runs against a MT 335, the only time any lag showed itself was during a 5mph rolling start.

Actually driving the car may show different results, but I didn't notice any lag when I test drove a steptronic e90 335.

I'm not so sure about this. As I mentioned, I didn't notice any lag while driving a 335i. Also I've talked to some former 545i owners who now drive 335s and they have no complaints about the engine.

Only one way to settle this. Line up the 535 vs 545/550 from a roll.

Nor does Torquey5 in the 335 - complaints seem to be centered on the 535.

I drove the 335 coupe 6spd and it was a beast with no lag. But it was kind of flat, I could not feel the torque. My guess is that this is more pronounced in the 535. I have not driven one and now that my 550 is on order, I really don't care to compare.

Besides there is no 6 spd available yet and this makes a world of difference with the smaller 6.

I have about 100 miles on my 535i - in town driving primarily. In non-sport mode I do notice some lag from dead stop, is it turbo lag? Not sure. (BTW, I thought it was worse in the 335)

Otherwise the engine is effortless is in all other situations including highway. There is some slight hesitation around 1500 RPM which I would attribute to turbo. Unfortunately, at around town speeds in non-sport mode you're in the 1500 range a lot.

There is very little launch lag in sport mode. Very responsive. It's sport mode all the time after break in.

I've had a two other turbo cars, the turbo-ness in this car is almost nonexistent. Almost.

The real question will be... who on earth will leave the 535i engine stock???

They'll wipe the floor with any of the V8 cars after a modest tuning...

Where would the difference come from though? Same engine, roughly the same weight, the same or at least very similar transmissions.

When driving a 745, it is noticeably sluggish compared to a 545, but that is due to the weight. The weight shouldn't be an issue between a 535 and 335.

That's right baby! It's called Vishnu! http://www.vishnutuning.com/

I'm considering the 535, instead of the 550 next, for this very reason.

These guys already have a remap for the 335. 300HP to 380 HP for around $1400. And this is only the beginning. I wouldn't be surprised to see these numbers push 400HP soon. Same will be avail for the 535 I'm sure.
