Dear Sir,

I own a 2004 BMW 525D, the drives like new and seems there is no problem at all with the car. On my way to work today, I over-took a car and a big white smoke came of the exhaust together whit a smell of burning oil, be side this I also noticed that the turbo noise has changed to a rattling one. I' ve parked the car immediately, left the car for about 5 mins, and I've started again the car, a white smoke came out of the car again, I turned it off and the smoke continued to come out for a few seconds. This never happened to me, accidentily yesterday I have checked the oil level and it was marking to the MAX. The car is saying that the service is overdue by 280miles, I have the service booked on the 7th September 2012. To put you in the picture in which conditions car is driven, I live in Malta so the trips are very short in distance, this morning it was a foggy and moist weather here (I don't know if this might be relevant). Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards,

Roderick

Check the coolant level from you car first..
If it's oil burning the smoke is blue/black.. White means water..

I had a GMC diesel truck for over 10 years (duramax engine). They had injector issues resulting in white smoke. You may have an injector dumping more fuel into a cylinder than needed, resulting in diesel vapor (white smoke)out the tail pipe. Get down take a whiff of the exhaust and see if you can smell the raw diesel. Be careful, it will get on your clothes and you will smell like fuel all day.

A fuel system pressure test should be able to detect an out of spec pressure issue.

white smoke out of exhaust is an indicator of oil being burned.

+1. White smoke on a diesel is typically unburned fuel. Oil burns blue not white.
