As there are a couple of peak white spots in the photo, I think the first explanation is probably more accurate. This M5 has been polished and buffed to a mirror-like finish, and because white doesn't give a deep reflection, all you see is the general color of the blue sky above.
CCD white outs are easy to achieve even when the colour is not white.

More telling is the the blue paving - almost the same colour as the forum banner! A big clue.

That is a better looking picture than what I posted. My original picture did look a little off.

Hmm, perhaps, but it is in the shade. The color temperature may be a bit cool but in the far left there is an awning that is getting full sun and it looks white.

Either way, the car looks great. So glad I ordered mine in alpine white despite not getting to see a white m-aero E60 in person. I never even considered a white car before this - I was planning to go Monaco Blue but I saw a couple of white BMWs driving around town and was blown away. Hot stuff!

Okay, I give. That looks much, much better. Even if the first was more representative of the shaded lighting of the actual situation.

Quite simply silver is the wood laminate flooring of the car world.

In 1999, ready for the millennium, HiFis and cars were decked out in "millennium silver".

We haven't grown out ouf it (or laminate flooring) yet.

ABC
Silver actually symbolizes the racing roots of the car world for BMW (and probably others too)...back in the day, cars were left unfinished and without any paint at all when they were raced - ergo they appeared silver in color...so in essence, you could say silver paint is like laminate flooring - its attempting to represent real racing heritage (like laminate represents real hardwood flooring).

I love the silver - easy to clean and shows the lines very well. I think white is a close second though (as long as you arent in a wet/dirty prone climate that has your car dirty all the time!)

Well, every manufacturer might now be able to claim that with the introduction of "Millennium Silver".

I believe that silver was Germany's racing color.
Like "British racing green" for GB and Red for Italy. I don't know if anyone used white?

You vaguely remember that episode of Top Gear too...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_inter...o_racing_colors

In Germany, from the 1930s to early 1960s, the traditional white paint was often not applied to bare sheets of metal in order to save weight, giving rise to the term Silver Arrows. When aluminium was replaced by fibreglass materials in the 1960s, some German teams returned to white paint, while others continued to use silver.

I was looking for white when I bought mine, no where to be found. Black was the ONLY color. And now after owning a black car I'll never do it again..... Looks good for 1/2 day after it's washed and that's it.
