I think most people do buy the 525 and 530 for their phenomenal lease rates that they give here in the States and also if you load up a 550 you can almost get into a 7 series which might be another reason people dont get them. Im happy with the 550 and I like that I have only seen a handful of 550's in NY so far... I like being unique.
I am not so sure about how much lower the lease is on a 530. When we ran the numbers, a 530 loaded with the same things as my 550 was only about $100 month cheaper.

Well if you get to loading out a 550 you start approaching close to the price of an M5 alot of people with that kind of money would just opt for the M5

I had to order my 540i6 in 2000 to get what I wanted: Sport Package + Manual Tranny. Most 540s on the lot are non-sport/steptronics.

Nothing different locally when the 545/550s came out.
Althought I must say the local dealer usually has ONE manual sport car on the lot, but usually completely loaded. It's more fun to order anyway, IMHO.

Understand where you're coming from, though I think even a well specced 550 should still be quite a bit cheaper than an M5 without options - and I don't think we've seen the end of the dealers trying to get "market adjustments" on the M yet. Not to say you can't get an M without markup but the ones I've seen out here are still optimistically priced
