I am starting to like the idea of a dual clutch transmission
in the 545 & M5. A smoother auto for the girl friend, 15% savings in
fuel and no throttle manipulation required by the driver.
I am wondering if the lack of a SMG in the 550 is a sign that
BMW is going this way?

"Fulbrook says the dual-clutch transmission provides fuel savings that are comparable to those of the CVT. Both use up to 15 percent less fuel than an automatic transmission. And the dual-clutch transmission is less expensive to make because it can be built on the same assembly line as a manual transmission. That means there is no need for retooling.'

No rumour

Its called the ZSG gearbox

Only slated to first appear mid to late next year in Europe, launching with the 335i

The audi/VW system has had many problems, and is not nice to drive in stop go traffic, so hopefually BMW will iron out the problems before its launched

Also heard that Audi's DSG has horrible downshift times if you skip gears... hope BMW will fix that too
