When do u know when to change Air Filter?

Hey, guys.simple question. When do u know when to change the air filter? My friend has an E60 and doesnt know when the air filter was last changed?
i checked it,looked ok but still not an expert so wanted some opinion. For the meanwhile, i took it out, took out most of the dust by taping and using a vaccum cleaner.

iDrive only shows the cabin air filter, I think engine air filter is done during service 2s every second oil change

That's a good question, I think it's normal to change it along with your oil and filters. Does it get dirtier when you use Auto Air function on all the time?

It's a good idea to clean them (both in air filters and the engine filter) as you did when the environment is very dusty.
Normally the iDrive tells you when to change them.
The mileage will come dramatically down of what the iDrive shows now compared to when they are dirty.
In my '05 E60 the iDrive gave my 15,000 km to change, but after one thousand kilometers it gave me 3,000 km's.
