If you want to lose the weight, remove the spare tire, the backseat (maybe not), the first aid kit, the rear and side shades, and the wife. The wife alone is about 100 lbs there. I think getting the new rims will save only about 40-50 lbs total. Really, I like the 124 style rims. They look great. If you upgrade, try on the 645i rims. Those are even better, IMO.

For me, putting on non-bmw rims may make the car look good, but it also makes it look cheaper. It's probably something in my head.

I picked up my M172 19" rims today.
The rears weigh 16kg & front 15kg.
But I only used a bathroom scale, so it may not be too accurate.

Here is a pic of my car....if memory serves me, the SSR's are about 8 -10lbs lighter than the OEM rims.

I've done this plus the jack. And, B&B muffler saves 30 lbs.

40 or so total, yes. But, those lbs. are rolling weight lbs. I don't have a reference right now but 40 lbs. of rolling weight are the equivalent of of something like 80 lbs. of non-rolling weight as I recall. Maybe its less, but whatever it is it is highly significant.

No, I don't think it's in your head. I agree somehow, but saving 80 lbs (or whatever the correct value is)? Yeehaa. Doing so is hard to resist.

why not get 19" CSL replicas??? really cheap... $1750 for 4 wheels + tires... staggered too... and only 24lbs per wheel.

Guys, it is a 4000 pound SEDAN.
I agree, I don't want boat anchors on my 4 corners, but sometimes this weight thing just gets out of control. If most people spent as much time making sure their wheels and tires were round and true as they did trying to save 20 pounds of unsprung weight, they'd be amazed how much better the car rides and drives. It's a big BOX, it's not a track car.
BTW, the RK wheels are extremely nice quality, but I just don't think 18's are big enough for the slab sided e60.

I've 'weighed in' on this a number of times (sorry couldn't help it). I replaced the OEM rims with 19" BBS RS-GT's and Goodyear F1 GS-D3 tires and saved 56 lbs of rotating, unsprung weight. The difference is absolutely stunning. Ride is better, handling incredibly sharp, and the car feels much quicker. My timed acelleration runs in 3rd gear from 2000 - 5000 rpm show a consistent and significant .3 second improvement with the lighter wheels and tires.

The OEM wheels are 32lbs front, and 34lbs rear. Very, very heavy cast wheels.
