Wheel compatibility 16"
I have a 2006 530i non sport in USA
Tire size 225/50/17.
I have virtually new Mich Artic Alpins from my 2003 530i non sport size 225/55//16, virtually same size as tire on my 2006 530i. Same diameter within less than 1%
Will any 16" wheels fit on my 2006 530i non sport so I can used these. Every other decent tire sems to cost around $650 - $800 installed. I really like the Artic Alpins. These are discontinued and the X-Ice don't come in my size.
I know the 520d is available in UK with 16" wheels.

You're correct that the 520d is fitted with 16" wheels in the UK market, but only on the lowest (LOWEST!) spec model.
Unless you buy genuine BMW wheels, you're going to need all the technical details for any alternatives - PCD is 120mm, but you'll need the correct off-set measurement also. Remember that offset is also related to the width of the wheel for any given installation.
The rear caliper clearance on my 17" wheels is pretty close therefore I'd check any potential wheels fit ok before buying. You may also wish to consider the merits of buying a wheel size that will be difficult to sell on in the future - that fact alone may make the cost of a new wheel/tyre combination a better option?

I think it will go but check it out on the label on the inside of the door(driver)
I know, that 545 and 535d are having a littlt bigger brake discs.
On my car the label says
205/60 R16
225/55 R16
225/50 R17
....
winter tyres i use is 215/55 R16 continental TS
i was looking for 225/55 R16 but they have no on the stock... tey gave me a 215755 instead... i think a car is a cm lower but the traction is good..

At least in Europe 530i comes standard with 225/55 16" wheels.
The x-models and 535d, 540i and 550i comes with standard 17" wheels
because they all have bigger dics.
