What?s that thing sticking up in the middle or the dash on the center speaker?

Is it the light sensor or is the light sensor located in the windshield behind the rear view mirror.

That's the light sensor. The one behind the rear view mirror is the rain sensor. Wonder how it knows a splattered bug or dirt from rain?

Wrong, its the solar sensor for the Aircon.

I don't think the basic aircon models have it.

DD is correct. Its the solar sensor for the aircon. The light sensor is incorporated with the rain sensor.

Assuming the worst, aircon is available in two versions outside north america, Basic and advanced, advanced varys the airconditioning with varying amounts of solar radiation (sunshine to me and you), basic doesn't!

I'm sure you knew that!

All of the above begs the question: Where is the headlight sensor?

its built into the rain-sensor housing

I specced the rain sensor for my wifes X3 and auto-headlight operation is a linked option (?80 for both....is this possibly BMW's best value extra!)
