I'm somewhat confused.

We are in Jan 2006 and people are talking about delivery of '2007' cars. This appears to be a US phenomonen.

I subscribed to C+D just to get a view of things automotive from the other side of the planet and the Feb edition is littered with references to 2007 cars.

I can understand production changes in, say September of any year, reflecting the specification level of cars for sale/delivery in the first quarter or first half of the following year. In that instance I can see why one could have a '2007' car in September 2006. But to look for 2007 cars in January 2006 seems a bit strange to me.

Is it some sort of snob appeal? Or one upmanship over someone with a '2006' year car purchased in January 2006. Or when when will 2008 models become available? Next month maybe?
Actually, the most arrogant "legal" thing I have ever seen BMW publish (forget the Lawyer's screen) was a sales literature statement that effectively said: "We determine what the model year the car is, not the calendar, and don't you dare challenge us."

This was probably 6-8 years ago that I read that (may have been in the mid-90s when they simply blew off the 5 series; went from 94 to 96, as I recall).

This latest stunt smells to high heavens like a game being played with leasing residual values or something. Whatever, blaming it on CARB is absurd. We've all seen those running-changes disclaimers (We reserve the right to upgrade as we go along), but this is clearly something much more meaningful, as CARB/US upgrades could easilly have been adapted as a running change denoted by serial numbers.

We'll probably never know the reasoning; we only get to see the depreciation results.

Jeers,

But in this case its supposedly something very specific. If you read that document that lists the changes, you'll find that the reason for MY2007 starting in a few months is that there's a new US emissions regulation and BMW must change their MY2006 cars in order to comply. Instead of just making a MY2006 with revised exhaust, they decided to call the new cars the brand spanking "new" MY2007.
And, BMW wanted to make my 6/05 purchased 545i 2 years old ASAP. That's the whole reason they did the stealthful introduction of the 550i. But, I'll have the last laugh since my car is leased. I hope everyone's 2005 545i's is leased.

My car not leased.

It's not just a US thing and it's not new.

In the late 70's I was an undergraduate engineer with Landrover and it was happening then. From memory, in those days model years were released in about September of the previous year.

Model Years incorporated all of the major changes, new engines (or tunes of)/gearboxes (or ratios), extra kit etc. In between, the only changes that were made were problem fixes. This allows you to print literature etc. and everyone is clear what you get with (e.g.) a MY06 model. It would be unacceptable to have a situation where your MY06 may, or may not, have the CARB engine (whatever that is...). The MY is really just a version name, the fact that it is also a date leads to the consequences you refer to.

March does seem a little early, but a forced engine change would be justification for this, and if MB are doing it too...

Me? Are you saying that BMW had to introduce a new model in March 06 for some reason that was unknown when they did the stealthful/highly secretive introduction of the 550i?
