Note that, it breaks my heart but, some of us in SoCal will rarely or may never will experience below 40F' to ever see this icon.

+1. Further clarification: Overpasses freeze before road surface and can freeze at 37 degrees under certain conditions. Ergo the alarm. It also appears on your I drive screen, perhaps you did not notice.
You are right, it is not in the manual. Another "undocumented feature."

My sister lives in SoCal and I see lots of flakes every time I visit her. Especially in the West Hollywood area.

It means if you're halfway on a 600km trip to Montreal and it's only October so you've still got your summer tires on, and it's accompanied by sudden visible snowflakes, you're about to feel like crapping your pants.
