My Ride: 550i 2009 Mod. with tints all around. Got Splitter and Spoiler coming. May do an exhaust.

CW! I have to ask! Is that a goood hardy Cup of Joe or Expresso? Thanks for all the great input. I too am a 530 man. Went to my local BMW CCA Chapter Picnic today. Wow those 2007 and 2008 M-5s are preddy! The Local Chapter was cool too! Course it always helps when the local detail crew comes out to do a little detail work. And as far as the 535 and a 550 debate? That new dbl Vanos has great potential! Dan from Delaware

That's a fantastic idea! You should start a thread! Novelty is a virtue.

How did this thread morph from one about handling into one about power?

Dan, my good man, that is a cup of French Roast coffee at a nice little cafe in Monte Carlo last November. My friend took the pic on his i-Phone unbeknowingst to me. The 530 suits my needs just fine as well. Glad you're involved with the BMW CCA. Cheers, Calvin

Laws of physics says lighter the car the better the handling.

True, but cars like the GT-R (which is far from light, but handles tremendously well) show us that a competent group of engineers can, to a certain extent, overcome the additional burden of a few extra pounds.

Anyone can mod a heavy car with the right suspension kit, wheels/tires and have a great handling car.. however based on same setup eg. 535i vs 550i with sport suspension ( I don't think they are that much different or significant, unless someone can come up with a source that says otherwise ) the 535i will out handle the 550i.

Applying the logical extension to that train of thought, are you suggesting the 535 would also out-handle the M5? That's also considerably heavier than the 535...

More to the point, the stock 535 Sport suspension is not the same as the standard 550 Sport suspension. The US market 550 Sport will always have the M-Sport, which is not the same as the standard setup on the stock 535 Sport. It is now possible to add M-Sport to a 535, but unless you do that it is indeed different. Furthermore, it is not clear whether the 535/550 M-Sports are in fact the same - BMW used to refer to the M-Sport 550 suspension as being "recalibrated" in its brochures. I'm not sure whether it still does. Either way, you need to also take into consideration the wheel and tire differences - the 550 M-Sport package brings the light 172's and non-RFT rubber.
