(no comments on the consumption of the dark stuff that came in pint glasses )
That explains why you didn't use much fuel

The roads in France are the best in Europe, you have to pay toll (150 USD for this trip) to drive on them, but it's worth it.
It is not scary at all to drive over this bridge, because it is a 4-lane highway with high walls, so you don't see how high you are.
Here is a better picture:
Wow thats insane. I would drive over it so fast thats scary as hell

Mrs. MacSid and I just did Scotland in our 530d as well ... +1 on the twisties in the western highlands ; +1 on the scenery and a definite +1 on the cruising capabilities of our diesels - our 12-day, 1,700km jaunt was done on just under 2 tanks of the dark stuff
You must have a bigger fueltank then, because mine gets me 700-800km's before the 50km's to go pling. Average comsumption on the whole trip to Spain was 8,2 L/100km with 1300km at 140 cruise control, and 800km with 160-170 cc.

Well spotted ... I meant to say just over 2 tankfuls. I'm generally getting approx. 850km per full tank on average (unless I decide to drive into downtown Amsterdam, for example), but have got 920 on a cruise-controlled 130 km/h jaunt across southern Austria / northern Italy. My average consumption over the 18 months or so that I've owned the car has settled on 7.4 L/100km, but I think that's gonna go down coz my new commute (Amsterdam-Leiden) has me on a motorway 90% of the time, and I'm starting to see the mid-6's

Mine's an E60, so probably a little lighter than your E61 (?), and the Mrs. and I travel light (no kids, strollers, and all the stuff you need to keep kiddies calm on long road trips)

The 6-figures are definitely not possible with my car, even driving at 80 km/h. If I do the drive to my work (25 km's) like an old lady I only get 8,0 L/100km, and that's only after changing the air-filter because before that I barely got under 10 L/100km.
Here in Spain it's 9,9 l/100km, but that is because of all the *&%$# roundabouts that they have financed with my tax money they have gotten from the EU

On the point of fuel consumption my 530dA (231BHP) returns average 40 mpg (UK) or approx 7lt/100km. On a motorway journey cruising between 80-90 mph and slowing to 60 mps (stupid UK speed limits on motorways) this increases to 43-44 mpg. This equates to approx 630 miles per tank.

One point - I try to keep my tyres at 36 psi as reduced pressure seems to have the biggest impact on mpg.

Anyone else seeing similar figures?

My car is a 530d SE Auto (231 BHP) with 18" rims 2006 vintage and approx 27k miles on the clock.

HOLY CRAP!! What a gorgeous piece of engineering!! It would be a thrill to drive it, though the price of admission is a bit prohibitive!
