I used Castrol European Formula 0W-30 before, but now Pep Boys no longer sell them. Castrol Syntec 5W-30 is not BMW LL-01. I have also used Lubro Moly from NAPA Parts
and they are BMW LL-04 rated. The difference between LL-01 and LL-04 is that LL04 is formulated for improved exhaust cleanliness and is a must have for the new
BMW clean diesel with particulate filters, but it can also be used with gasoline engines safely.

Exactly. I think it used to be Castrol and BMW recently changed it... anyway, if you're using Penzoil or something else you arent using the right stuff. What it will do I dont know but I am assuming there are certain protections built into the Mobil1 0w-40... And the Mobil1 actually lists BMW on the back of the bottle.

OE BMW LL oil, 5.98 quart. 530i M54 takes little less than 7 quarts. I usually add all 7 and do not let them drip dry while adding....that and a new filter you get about the right dosage 6.9 quarts
