What does the front spoiler do?

My Ride: Current - MY2008 530i comfort access,active steering, HUD, prof nav/TV, bluetootth etc .....
Old - 2006 530i comfort access, active steering, HUD, NAV/TV, Bluetooth

On my 2007 e60 it was not present, so it may not be a missing part on some models.
It is though on the front of my post LCI e60.
And, I knew NASCAR was good for something, just could not figure it out, now I know it is an education on spoilers aka air dams.

I wonder at what point it is useful, in Australia I am limited to 110km/h (~70mph).

My M-Technik aerodynamic kit shipped from Germany includes the rubber front spoiler. The M-Technik aerodynamic kit installed from the factory does not include this rubber front spoiler. The rubber front spoiler for the M-Technik bumper is no longer being made, therefore it does not appear to be a critical part. It easily installed if you choose to purchase a replacement - it just clips on.
