What does the front spoiler do?

My Ride: Current - MY2008 530i comfort access,active steering, HUD, prof nav/TV, bluetootth etc .....
Old - 2006 530i comfort access, active steering, HUD, NAV/TV, Bluetooth
My front spoiler (the black rubber thingy at the bottom of the bumper bar) fell off during a long drive.
This led me to wonder what is the function of this thin strip of rubber?

Are you referring to part #15 in this link? If so, it's only on automatics (could be why some of you don't have one), but at the end of the day it's not a significant component... although it would be cheap to replace.

Actually, no... There are spoilers on the front and are often called air dams, because in addition to directing air flow they also reduce the amount of air flowing underneath the vehicle which reduces aerodynamic lift. Usually they are below the front bumper... watch NASCAR!
