My front spoiler (the black rubber thingy at the bottom of the bumper bar) fell off during a long drive.

This led me to wonder what is the function of this thin strip of rubber?

I think he is referring to the rubber air deflector. I don't know its purpose other than controlling air flow under the car.

Are you referring to part #15 in this link? If so, it's only on automatics (could be why some of you don't have one), but at the end of the day it's not a significant component... although it would be cheap to replace.

Actually, no... There are spoilers on the front and are often called air dams, because in addition to directing air flow they also reduce the amount of air flowing underneath the vehicle which reduces aerodynamic lift. Usually they are below the front bumper... watch NASCAR!

If it's that $15 part I would just replace it. I hate missing parts.

In Australia it is $49! I think it has to be the cheapest part sold by BMW.
